Welcome to issue 10 of Architexture, a monthly newsletter from the Architecture Centre Network (ACN) - the independent body representing architecture and built environment centres in the UK.
ACN News
£1.9 million boost for architecture centres
CABE has announced almost £1.9 million in funding for 18 architecture and built environment centres in England, to be distributed through its regional grants programme for 2006-08.
The programme aims to promote and advance education, public participation and design quality in the built environment. For a full list of funding recipients visit our website [link].
School Design Workshop
'Being Involved in School Design' is the title of a one-day workshop on the 3rd March exploring participatory school design projects. Funded by CABE, it is being produced and managed by School Works in collaboration with the ACN and a number of member centres including Lighthouse (Glasgow) and Open House (London). Interest is likely to be very high in this event so if you are interested in attending please contact Hugh Dames before the 7th Feb [more].
New Architecture Centre
The post of Director for a new Architecture and Built Environment Centre serving Devon and Cornwall has been announced - a partnership between CABE and the Regional Centre for Excellence in the South West, the closing date for applications is this Friday 3rd February [link].
Special Interest Groups
Collaborative working amongst centres continues to grow with the development of a number of working groups which focus specifically on mutual areas of interest or speciality. Recent months have seen meetings of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) for Education, Marketing, and Organisational Development at venues across the UK.

The architecture centre for Hull and the Humber region has announced that the first exhibition in their flagship new building will be the ‘Joinedupdesignforschools’ touring exhibition [link] telling the story of the Sorrell Foundation's four-year programme which worked closely with over 60 schools and 700 schoolchildren exploring how good design can improve quality of life in schools.
Architecture Foundation
Winter Nights the weekly series of free evening talks from leading young practices London concludes this Wednesday 1st February at 7pm at the Architecture Foundation's gallery in Old Street, with Graeme Williamson of Block Architecture [more].
And also starting on the 1st February will be the Architecture Foundation's new exhibition Blooming St Luke's.

Featuring specially commissioned films of graphic designer Peter Saville and artists Gary Hume and Georgie Hopton, it reveals how creative agency Scarlet Projects worked with the artists in partnership with EC1 New Deal for Communities and Islington Greenspace, to re-design St Luke's Gardens in EC1 [more].
Architecture Centre, Bristol
As London and the UK start major preparations for the 2012 Olympics, the Architecture Centre examines in detail what is already proving to be an important new sporting asset for the UK with an exhibition exploring David Morley Architects' stunning new Sports Training Facility for the University of Bath [link].
Solent
Paul Grover, the director of Solent Centre for Architecture & Design (SCA+D) has been recognised in CABE's 2005 'Festive Fives', the annual recognition of those people and organisations which have achieved the most to help champion good design [more].
Northern Architecture
2006 sees the continuation of Northern Architecture's programme of seminars and talks exploring placemaking and housing - My Home: Our Place features a talk on the Oldham Rochdale Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder from Proctor Matthews Architects [link] on the 9th February.
RIBA Trust
In 2005 threats of closure prompted international support for the School of Architecture at Cambridge University. Following its reprieve, a new exhibition at the RIBA - Compendium celebrates the school’s contribution to the built environment through its alumni and looks to the future [link].

Prefabs Sprouting?
'Prefabulous London: The A-Z of Modern City Homes' is the latest exhibition at New London Architecture, explaining how the latest house types can answer the need for new homes in the capital [more].
Future of Community Festival
The Future Cities Project has announced details of a one-day debate, the Future of Community Festival. Among the many topics covered in the workshops and debates will be New Urbanism, sustainable communities and multiculturalism with featured speakers including broadcaster Jonathan Meades and historian Tristram Hunt. Design Competition
Architecture Sans Frontieres UK and Archaos, UK national architecture student association, have announced details of an open design competition to design an AIDS orphanage in South Africa [more].
Vacancies
CABE has announced details of a number of new opportunities to join its design review team including the positions of Head of design review and a call for design review panel members [more].
Architecture Week 2006
The national public celebration of contemporary architecture from June 16th-25th 2006 has now reached its 10th anniversary year. An Arts Council England and RIBA joint initiative in association with the ACN, many regions are now calling for events to make this the biggest and best Architecture Week to date. Sustainable Communities
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) has announced booking and programme details for the 2006 Sustainable Communities Conference on the 31st March at the QE II Conference Centre, Westminster [link].
Architecture Centres International
EFAP
The 2006 meeting of the European Forum for Architectural Policies (EFAP) is to take place in Vienna on the on 8th-9th June 2006 under the Austrian EU Chairmanship. EFAP 2005 was successfully held in October last year at The Lighthouse, Glasgow and papers from this event are now available online at www.architecture-forum.net.
Architectuurcentrum Aorta
Visitors to the historic city of Utrecht in the Netherlands may wish to take advantage of the architectural guiding services of Aorta, the local architecture centre. A range of expert tours are available which also feature visits to contemporary buildings including work by Miralles and Koolhaas www.aorta.nu.

Frankfurt's Deutsches Architektur Museum has announced details of its summer show for 2006 - Jean Prouvé. The Poetics of Technical Objects
