Recruitment
The Architecture Centre Network is currently recruiting for the exciting opportunity of ACN Director.
This new position, reporting to the Chair of the Board, is for an outstanding candidate who will devise, develop and implement strategies that strengthen the collective endeavours of the UK’s Architecture and Built Environment Centres [more].

Architecture Week 2006
The tenth anniversary of Architecture Week was marked by the biggest ever number of events organised by members of the ACN.
Over 80 events took place across the UK, including the national launch in Birmingham co-ordinated by MADE, podcast architectural walks in Cambridge courtesy of Shape East and a host of events for the public in Northern Ireland delivered by PLACE [more].
Impact Study
The ACN has recently completed its comprehensive second stage survey of architecture centre activity and operational capacity in the UK. An announcement of headlines and key figures will be published in the next edition of Architexture.

Niall McLaughlin's stunning new building for arc, the first purpose-built architecture centre in the UK, has recently been awarded a RIBA Award in 2006 [more]. Open House
Stephen Witherford and William Mann of Witherford Watson Mann Architects, newly announced winners of 2006 Europan 8 UK for innovative housing schemes [link], will be discussing housing and the city for the Open House Contemporary lecture series this evening [more]. Architecture Foundation
Accompanying Airspace, their major exhibition on the future of London's tall buildings, Architecture Foundation present a summer debate on the 15th July with the planners who are most engaged with this issue [more].
Congratulations too to Horstreich, the band awarded best performance in Architecture Rocks 2006, for the closing party of the London Architecture Biennale. Architecture Centre, Bristol
Opening on the 18th July, photographer Stephen Monger's exhibition of photo-realistic images Urban Documents explores Weston Super Mare and its environs, obtained from his intricate cardboard models of buildings [more]. New London Architecture
Opening this week, Turning the Tide is the new exhibition and breakfast talks programme providing answers and perhaps posing some difficult questions regarding the regeneration of the Thames Gateway [more].
Kent Architecture Centre
Kent Architecture Centre, in association with writer and education specialist Eileen Adams, has published Shaping Places the report on their eponymous process of inter-professional collaboration in education through projects in 15 schools over a period of two years across the South East of England [more].
Northern Architecture
Earlier this year Northern Architecture invited Cllr. Daniel Moylan, the Deputy Leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, to talk to the Design and Historic Environment Champions Club in the North East about his role as champion in the controversial but now much praised re-design of Kensington High Street. A fascinating transcript of Moylan's notes and responses to questions is now available for download from Northern Architecture's website [link]. Cube
The current exhibition Interventions features new works by young architects from the College of Continuity in Architecture at the Manchester School of Architecture and the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in Barcelona [more].
Opun

BSF Event at the National College for School Leadership.

Opun, the architecture centre for the UK East Midlands, recently delivered a major student conference for Nottingham schoolchildren aimed at giving pupils, from the 13 schools in attendance, a ‘voice’ and influence over the national Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme [more].
RIBA Trust
Opening on the 14th July at the RIBA in London, Ideal City / Real Projects explores the work of Von Gerkan, Marg and Partners in China and in particular, the design of Lingang New City, an entirely new port city for 800 000 inhabitants near Shanghai [more].
The Lighthouse
Congratulations to Stuart MacDonald, director of The Lighthouse, who has been awarded an OBE for services to architecture in the Queen’s 80th Birthday Honours list [more].
MADE
The regional architecture centre for the UK West Midlands has recently published a publication and DVD to accompany their Youth Spaces programme, a pioneering new approach to reducing anti-social behaviour by engaging young people in the design of six bespoke youth shelters across the West Midlands region [link].

Arts Council of England
Arts Council England has announced that it will be prioritising the visual arts. In June 2006 it launched Turning Point, a ten-year strategy which follows on from a major Arts Council review of the contemporary visual arts - the first independent review of the sector ever undertaken in England [more]. On Sat 8th July, a rare chance for visitors to see inside Sir Denys Lasdun's Royal College of Physicians, his acclaimed masterpiece set in the historic beauty of Regent's Park, London [more]. CABE
A series of commissioned essays has been published by CABE to accompany their recent campaign The cost of bad design, highlighting what really happens when buildings and spaces go wrong [link]. DCMS
On Friday 16 June at RIBA the Minister for Culture David Lammy MP launched the new DCMS/DfES Publication: Laying the Foundations: Using the Built Environment to Teach, authors of case studies included Catherine Williamson, ACN Education Co-ordinator, together with contributions from ACN member organisations The Building Exploratory and RIBA Trust [more]. The RTPI has developed a new online information resource for individuals interested in becoming nvolved in the planning and management of their local environment [link]. The RTPI Community Planning Project UK has been supported by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). English Heritage
July sees the publication of a new English Heritage title on the architecture of Catholic churches 'A Glimpse of Heaven' with text by Christopher Martin and phototography by Alex Ramsay. It follows a two-year joint project between English Heritage and the Catholic Church to help guide and better identify the challenges and complex decision-making required in managing a portfolio of historic church buildings [link].
Architecture Sans Frontières
ASF-UK are to collaborate with the Institute for Development in Extreme Environments (IDEE) and the Eden Foundation again this year for their Summer School 2006, to be held at the Eden Project from 1-6th September [link].
RIBA
The 2006 RIBA Conference has been announced from 27-28th October 2006 and this year shall take place in Venice. Social City - Architecture and change features Lord Foster and a host of other keynote speakers. As well as the customary discussion, debate and networking there is also the opportunity to be expertly conducted on a number of architectural tours of the city and the Veneto region [link].
Architecture Centres International
DAZ
The German Architecture Centre, Berlin opens its summer season with an exhibition of the winning schemes in the 2006 European Architecture and Technology Awards [link].
Kuntshaus Graz a winner of one of these awards is noted for its remarkable 800sqm multimedia façade. Programming the skin allows low resolution moving images to be seen across the city - and a dedicated website features a download allowing users to actually visualise how their designs might appear in situ [link].
Frac Centre, Orleons
Is currently hosting a retrospective of the work of the Ettore Sottsass, the architect, designer and artist made famous by his 1970 Valentine typewriter for Olivetti [link].
The Frac Centre also drew on their extensive collection to collaborate with the Barbican on the the major exhibition Future City: Experiment and Utopia in Architecture 1956-2006 currently on show in London [link].
Pavillon de l'Arsenal
And opening in July, the Parisian centre for architecture presents an exploration of over 100 temporary exhibition designs - by architects - including work by Massimiliano Fuksas, Toyo Ito, Jean Nouvel and many others [link].
