Welcome to issue 19 of Architexture, the monthly newsletter from the Architecture Centre Network (ACN) - the independent body representing architecture and built environment centres in the UK.


ACN News

How Places Work
October saw the official launch by Lord Foster and John Sorrell of How Places Work the national campaign to motivate a generation of young people to understand and demand great architecture and public spaces.

Over the next two years, in partnership with the Architecture Centre Network, CABE will give 12,000 young people aged 11-14 the opportunity to see inspiring buildings and public spaces in the company of gifted architects and designers [more].

A+DEN Conference 2006

On 27 and 28 October, 2006 Catherine Williamson (ACN) and Jayne Bradley (MADE) represented the Network at the first US built environment education network meeting, instigated by the Chicago Architecture Foundation [more].

Northern Architecture

The architecture centre for the North East of England has announced details of its 2006/7 events programme beginning 28th November with The North East Look a debate asking what should guide us as we shape the region of the future in an increasingly globalised and uniform world? [more].

The announcement follows publication of its Annual Review for 2006 outlining the many ways by which they promote high quality architecture and design of public space in the region [more].

New London Architecture
The latest exhibition London's Moving examines how London is responding to current transport challenges as well as those posed by major infrastructure projects such as Crossrail and the 2012 Olympics [more].

The Building Exploratory
A TV programme naming Hackney as the worst place to live in Britain has been strongly contradicted by the experience of staff working at the Hackney-based architecture centre The Building Exploratory [more].

Open House
Open House has been commissioned by CABE to undertake a major feasibility study to explore the interest in and need for a potential ‘hub’ or future architecture and built environment centre for the 2012 Olympics, around which a programme of public activity, engagement and education relating to the Olympic site(s) can take place.

CREATE:MKSM

At its official launch on the 10th October at the 2006 BURA Conference [link], CREATE:MKSM the new Milton Keynes and South Midlands architecture centre, made a robust response to English Partnership’s publication of the growth strategy for Milton Keynes to 2031 [more].

Public Arts
Award-winning architect David Adjaye is about to have his first exhibition in the Yorkshire region. Models and photographs of Adjaye's work including the designs for his stunning new Market Hall for the city will be on show at the Orangery, Wakefield until 2nd Feb 2007 [more].

RIBA Trust
Adjaye/Associates were also recently shortlisted for the 2006 RIBA Stirling Prize for their Idea Store Whitechapel building in London. An exhibition of all six shortlisted schemes including the winning scheme by the Richard Rogers Partnership is currently being showcased in the Florence Hall at the RIBA, Portland Place, London until 25 November [more].

Also showing at the RIBA's Architecture Exhibition Gallery at the V&A this November is On the Threshold: The Changing Face of Housing. Curated by Rob Wilson it aims to show how in a time of high demand for new housing, good housing design can foster a sense of community by helping create good neighbourhoods [more].

The Lighthouse
Scotland’s National Architecture and Design Centre has announced that Nick Barley is to be its new Executive Director. Barley brings to The Lighthouse over 15 years of experience as an architecture and design consultant, curator, publisher and business manager. He is expected to take up position in January 2007 [more].

Architecture Foundation
The Architecture Foundation is entering an exciting new period with news that planning permission for their permanent home on Bankside, designed by Zaha Hadid, has been granted [more].

PLACE
The architecture centre for Northern Ireland is currently hosting an exhibition showing the transformation of Belfast from small town to major city. Using a series of maps and views the exhibition is based on the next volume of the Royal Irish Academy Historic Towns Atlas; until 02 Dec [more].



Other News

CABE
On the 22 November 2006 CABE will publish the findings of its project on the character and identity of the Thames Gateway as a means to capture the unique qualities of the landscape, design and existing identities of places within it, and look at how these can be used to ensure that new development there is of high quality [link].

ASC
The Academy for Sustainable Communities has announced that the ASC Awards for Sustainable Communities are now open for entries. These new awards succeed the Deputy Prime Minister's Award for Sustainable Communities, which since 2003 has recognised projects and initiatives that contribute to making better places in which to live and work [link].

RIBA Conference 2006
The Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, speaking at the 2006 RIBA Conference in Venice, has underlined the impact good urban design has on the quality of urban life. A transcript of the speech is available on the DCMS website [link].

PM's Better Public Building Award
The City of London Academy designed by architects Studio E has won the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award for 2006. The comprehensive school in Bermondsey beat off strong competition from 13 other shortlisted schemes [link].

Architecture Sans Frontières
ASF-UK are to hold a two-week summer school in Bangkok from 4-18 January 2007 working with the community in collaboration with local professionals. This is an excellent opportunity to gain first hand experience with the challenges facing millions of inhabitants of cities in the developing world. Six Cities

The Six Cities Design Festival was launched last week. Developed and managed by The Lighthouse, it is a new initiative aimed at unlocking Scotland’s creativity and innovation as a means of competing in the global marketplace [link].



Architecture Centres International

MAK Center
The Los Angeles-based MAK Center for Art and Architecture is currently showing The Gen(h)ome Project, an exhibition exploring the integration of life sciences with architecture. Guest curated by Open Source Architecture, artists have been invited to produce their own 'genetic modifications' of the structure, interiors and grounds of the 1922 modernist icon - The Schindler House [link].

NAi

Luminous Buildings, Architecture of the Night at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) will be the first in a major programme of events for Rotterdam 2007 City of Architecture, a city-wide festival of both contemporary and historic architecture [more].

NAi Maastricht
The NAi has also recently opened its first satellite museum in the Netherlands. NAi Maastricht will champion architecture and design across the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion through a programme of exhibitions, lectures and debates at the Wiebengahal building in the city centre [link].
