Welcome to issue 20 of Architexture, the monthly newsletter from the Architecture Centre Network - the independent body representing architecture and built environment centres in the UK.


ACN News

Exciting Minds
The ACN recently exhibited at exciting minds, a national conference aimed to explore the importance of creativity in education and organised by Creative Partnerships the Government’s creativity programme for schools and young people managed by Arts Council England.

The ACN offered a range of printed resources, information on architecture centres and inspirational tours to the Royal Exchange Theatre. There was keen interest from teachers in built environment education [more].

New Projects
The ACN is currently busily engaged with a number of ongoing and new projects with architecture centres, these include the implementation of our new online Network Digital Asset Management system, further meetings of our special interest groups (SIGs) and the 7th Education Forum in Bristol.

New Director
As reported in Architexture 18, December 11th 2006 will see Michael Craven formally take up his post as the first full-time Director of the ACN.


Member News

RIBA Trust
Liverpool's celebration as European Capital of Culture in 2008 will feature two major architectural events courtesy of the RIBA Trust.

The life and work of the most famous architect of the 20th century, Le Corbusier, will feature in a major new international exhibition, which will premiere in Liverpool in 2008. Le Corbusier: The Art of Architecture will be exhibited in the Lutyens' crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King from 02 October 2008 until 11 January 2009 [more].

The RIBA Trust will also be bringing the RIBA Stirling Prize to Liverpool for 2008. The new Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool [link] by Wilkinson Eyre Architects will be the venue for the event which again will be broadcast live on Channel 4, on Saturday 11 October.

New London Architecture
On the 12th December, PLACE #2, will be the second in a series of workshop seminars with NLA for everyone with an interest in the design, development and planning of London. Join NLA and an expert panel to discuss and debate the key issues that will determine the successful redevelopment of London Bridge [more].

The Building Exploratory
'Friday Coffee Mornings' are a new programme of lifelong learning sessions for older residents in Hackney from the Building Exploratory. The sessions deliver a diverse range of thought-provoking activities to help participants broaden their knowledge and develop new skills [more].

Shape East
The 2006 Koralek Built Environment Lecture focused on Sustainable Solutions and featured architect Sarah Wigglesworth of the award-winning Straw Bale House. The third lecture in this programme, the series title reflects the tragic loss earlier this year of Shape East's first Director Ben Koralek who established the event [more].

The Architecture Centre, Bristol
Opening soon is a rare opportunity to view the cream of British architecture when the 11th RIBA Stirling Prize exhibition - featuring Richard Rogers Partnership's prize-winning Barajas Airport - together with the remaining five shortlisted schemes will be shown at The Architecture Centre [more].

A reminder too that the recently refurbished Architecture Centre will also be open Thursdays in December, 17.00 – 20.00 for late-night Christmas shopping [more].

Urban Vision North Staffordshire
Urban Vision has commissioned an assessment of the historical significance of the North Staffordshire conurbation, from expert consultants The Conservation Studio. Together with a similar study of the urban core carried out for RENEW, the housing pathfinder, this provides a unique overview of the historic development of the urban area, which will be used to inform the regeneration of the sub-region.

To complement the technical study UVNS is inviting local people to consider what is valuable about their built environment by entering their brilliant buildings photographic competition. Selected entries from which will be used to illustrate a published version of the report to be printed in 2007 [link].

The Lighthouse

Proposals for the redevelopment of the controversial Cardross Seminary have won interior design graduate, Stuart Gordon, the 2006 Glasgow 1999 Design Medal. Now in its 3rd year, the Medal is awarded to the further or higher education student studying design in Glasgow whose work shows a high level of creativity, originality and imagination. Exhibition continues until 18 Feb 2007 [more].

And just opened at Lighthouse as part of the National Programme for Architecture, Northern City (between Light and Dark) explores the schizophrenic character of Edinburgh via the visual interplay of four collaborations between leading Scottish-based architectural practices and award winning artists [more].

Architecture Foundation
The Architecture Foundation is celebrating 10 years of Jamie Fobert’s practice with an exhibition at the Yard Gallery, Old Street, London. Model Wall - one of three main exhibition components - provides the viewer with the sensation of exploring Fobert's projects, including Tate St Ives and Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, at full scale [more].



Other News

CABE
A national conference for local authority design champions is to take place on the 12th Dec 2006 in London, organised by CABE and opened by the government's own design champion, the Rt. Hon Tessa Jowell MP. Aimed at nominated local authority design champions, council leaders, heads of planning and other senior individuals and features many practical sessions as well as the launch of Better public building, the definitive guide making the cause for good design [more].

A number of our member architecture centres support the work of local authority design champions, for an example of practice visit the Northern Architecture website [link].

English Heritage

Heritage Counts 2006, the fifth annual report on the state of the historic environment has recently been published by English Heritage with a call for the increased adaptive and innovative re-use of our historic builidings [link].

Projects ETC
An online ideas store to help cultural websites stand out from the crowd has been launched by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The ProjectsETC website aims to encourage information-sharing between institutions and focuses on the overlapping areas of education, technology and culture [link].

RIAS Andrew Doolan Award 2006
Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre in Inverness, designed by Page\Park Architects of Glasgow, was announced the winner of the RIAS Andrew Doolan Award 2006. The prize of £25k is the biggest architecture prize in Europe, awarded annually in memory of Scottish architect Andrew Doolan, who founded the award in 2002 [link].

Evening Economy
The Civic Trust has launched a report NightVision following three years’ research into the evening and night time economy. The report explores options for creating a more inclusive evening, which will offer a safe and welcoming place for all [link].

National Tree Week
With sustainable construction high on the architectural agenda participating in The Tree Council’s National Tree Week - until 3 December 2006 - is perhaps a fitting way of celebrating the traditional start of the tree planting season [link].



Architecture Centres International

Arkitekturmuseet
Architects Anders Holmer and Kristina Dalberg of Zork outline a vision for the future of Gothenburg with Älvmageddon, an exhibition exploring potential solutions to extreme climate change at the Swedish Museum of Architecture [link].

ACMA
Costruire le modernità from from the Italian Centre for Architecture is a series presenting the work of Albini, Gardella and Mollino three of the key figures in Italian twentieth century architecture. Ignazio Gardella (1905-1999) is the second subject explored in this major exhibition in Genoa until 30 Jan 2007 [link].

CCA
Victor Burgin: Voyage to Italy opens in December at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, UK conceptual artist Victor Burgin's powerful black and white photographs inspired by a Carlo Fratacci photograph of Pompeii in the CCA archive [link].
