Welcome to Architexture, a monthly newsletter from the Architecture
Centre Network (ACN) - the independent body representing architecture
and built environment centres in the UK.
ACN News
'Big Day Out'
On the 19th July at Tate Modern, London the ACN held its annual Big
Day Out, welcoming over 50 Network members from across the UK and
Northern Ireland to a packed programme of events.

The Big Day Out frames the ACN's AGM with a host of a related
talks, workshops and events - enabling directors, staff and associates
from over 20 architecture centres to share information, learn from others
and provide a valuable networking opportunity.
Welcome news from the 2005 AGM includes the announcement that three Centres
- arc, Solent Centre for Architecture and Design, and Urban Vision North
Staffordshire have formally been admitted as full members of the ACN.
Member-sessions included a meeting of our Education Forum led by ACN
Education Officer Catherine Williamson, a Network update by ACN National
Co-ordinator Peter Luxton, and a presentation by Charles Knevitt, Director
of the RIBA Trust.
Delegates were also treated to a presentation by Sheena Wagstaff, Chief
Curator at Tate Modern who discussed Herzog & de Meuron An Exhibition
currently showing until 29th August.
Rounded off by a boat trip to Marks Barfield's RIBA Award-winning Millbank
Millennium Pier followed by a drinks reception, the Big Day Out
yet again manifested the vitality and breadth of work in the built environment
from UK Architecture Centres.

Member News
smartLIFE
A European project working across Sweden, Germany and the UK, smartLIFE
is a Cambridgeshire-based inititive who have partnered with shape Cambridge,
the built environment centre for the East of England, to deliver a pilot
programme of housing design workshops for young people and their teachers
this Autumn.
Shape are currently seeking architects, manufacturers and house-builders
/ housing developers who are building new housing in the East of England
using MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) to contribute to these workshops.

Delivering High Quality Design in the South East
The Kent Architecture Centre (KAC), working closely with CABE and SEEDA,
currently operate the South East Regional Design Panel (SERDP) - which
is now regarded as the national model for regional review. Welcome news
then that a Design Excellence in North Kent (DENK) Design Panel
is being set up by KAC in conjunction with Kent County Council using funds
provided by ODPM, to champion high quality design in the Thames Gateway,
Kent.
KAC wishes to commission design panel members to join the DENK Design
Panel. Expressions of interest are invited from urban designers, architects,
landscape architects, developers, engineers, and others with a commitment
to design, and.with the necessary knowledge, skills and capacity, to attend
up to five day's between September 2005 and March 2006. An honorarium
of £300 per day and £200 per half day (including expenses)
will be paid. Interested parties are invited to contact Ruth

Modern Fairytale
The Architecture Foundation have moved location to their new London gallery:

it concides with their presentation of a new architectural collaboration
between Eley Kishimoto and 6a Architects: 'Hairywood tower', a
6.3 metre high urban summer house will be on show until 31st August [more].
International Delegation to Berlin
Following the success of their 2004 visit to Lille, MADE are pleased
to announce details of their 2005 delegation to Berlin. From the 12-14
October join MADE with a diverse group of senior officers, elected members,
artists, architects, design champions, planners, urban designers, regeneration and other built
environment practitioners to see the latest in design- led regeneration
in the German capital [more].
Model City
Visitors to Bristol may wish to visit The Architecture Centre's new show
Model City, which features the remarkable work of artists Sophie Warren
and Jonathan Mosley [more].
Solent
The Architecture and Design Centre for Solent has unveiled a new website
and corporate ID [link] which
over the coming months will provide a useful resource for details of their
growing programme.

of its Membership programme, membership is free and open to all and has
a range of benefits [more].
As work starts on site with the arrival of the five pods forming part
of the pioneering new building by Niall McLoughlin Architects [link]

Lord Mayor of London visits Building Exploratory
City of London Lord Mayor Michael Savory met children from the Tyssen
after-school club at the Building Exploratory, Hackney this week as they
participated in one of their free workshops for playschemes taking place
this summer.

The Lord Mayor is Head of the Corporation of London, the business authority
for the City of London business district which borders Hackney. Its charitable
arm, the Bridge House Trust, has backed The Building Exploratory, along
with many other community schemes.
Public Realm Opportunities
Public Arts in Wakefield are building on what is becoming a highly successful
year in terms of new contracts with the announcement of two new key positions
to take forward their public realm work. Vacancies for a Director of Public
Realm and Manager of Public Realm Learning are currently being advertised
- check out the ACN

National News
£12m for Cultural Leadership
Arts Council England has just announced a £12 million partnership
programme in response to the UK Government's ambition to improve the business
impact of cultural creativity announced in the Budget earlier this year.
The consultation period for 'Cultural Leadership Programme a
call for ideas' will run until 14th October 2005 [link].
Sustainable Communities Plan
Earlier this month the Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP, Minister for Housing and
Planning, delivered a keynote speech on the Government's Sustainable Communities
Plan organised by the IPPR and attended by the ACN. In a robust speech
the Minister claimed the current marketplace was 'socially unjust' for
the majority of first-time buyers [more].
Youth Matters
The UK Department for Education and Skills published its green paper on
key issues relating to how we support and challenge teenagers 'Youth
Matters' [link].
which states 'we want young people to have more things to do and places
to go in their local area'.
Stakeholders may be interested in 'Youth Spaces' a collaborative project
between MADE (Midlands Architecture and the Designed Environment) and
the Government Office for the West Midlands which commissiones a number
of 'youth shelters' enabling young people to design their own individual
spaces to 'hang-out' in - across 8 regional locations.

The shelters were designed through the collaborative engagement of young

Creative Neighbourhoods
Is the title of a new publication by the Aston Housing Consultancy in
partnership with The Housing Corporation and Arts Council England exploring
the role of the arts in building sustainable communities. To accompany
the launch of this best practice guide, six one-day seminars will be held

2006 Arts & Business Awards
Arts & Business, the UK creative network announced this month the
call for entries to its 28th Annual Arts & Business Awards. Recognising
excellence in business and UK-based arts partnership or sponsorship there
are now eleven categories for nominations [link].
Equality of Opportunity?
CABE this month publishes a research project into the representation of
black minority ethnic students and professionals in the built environment
industry; exploring the evidence and experiences of barriers to entry
and progression. Essential reading for all sector businesses and organisations
considering setting-up or adapting monitoring and evaluation policies.

Affordable Housing
July also sees the publication of a paper commissioned in 2003 by the
ODPM with the University of Cambridge and of Sheffield to examine the
delivery of affordable housing through Section 106 agreements [link].
City Escape and Escapade
A one-day symposium on the 30th July at the ICA exploring the culture
of cities from the artists, writers and thinkers who inhabit them [more].
Mobile Homes?
Finally, news that Faber Maunsell and Hugh Broughton Architects have won
the competition for the new British Antarctic Survey (BAS) Halley Research
Station in a competition run by the RIBA.

The winning scheme features a new modular station, elevated on ski-based
jackable legs to avoid burial by snow, that can be towed across the ever-moving
Brunt Ice Shelf. An exhibition detailing all three shortlisted entries
is currently being shown at the RIBA
Gallery, 66 Portland Place, London until the 6th August [more].
European Architecture News
Istanbul Architecture Biennale
Arkitera, the first and only independent Architecture Centre for Turkey
has announced dates for an International Istanbul Architecture Biennale
from 3rd-30th April 2006 [link].
The announcement follows the success of the recent UIA 2005 World Congress
earlier this month.
Memorial
And in this time of remembrance not only for the 60th anniversary of the
end of the Second World War in Europe, but also more recently with the
tragedy in London, news that Finnish architects Lahdelma & Mahlamäki
have recently been selected to design the Museum of the History of Polish
Jews, in Warsaw [link].
