Architexture 6 : September 2005

Welcome to Architexture, a monthly newsletter from the Architecture Centre Network (ACN) - the independent body representing architecture and built environment centres in the UK.

ACN News

Living Together
The title of a major new collaborative programme from member centres of the ACN that considers the way we live in terms of physical design and social reality. A steering group is already established and further meetings are to be held this autumn exploring how the many exciting concepts discussed to date may be taken forward. Watch this space.

Glasgow 2005
From the 8th-15th October Glasgow plays host to the BLOCK Architectural Festival, a week-long programme of walks, workshops and events organised by The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City - www.blockarc.co.uk.

This year also sees a number of high-profile events in the programme including an Urban Summit meeting on October 13th which will explore New Urbanism and the Future of Place Making.


From 13-14th October the Lighthouse will host the meeting of the European Forum of Architectural Policies (EFAP) whose conference on Identity and Democracy will take place on Friday 14th.

On Saturday 15th the festival closes with The Stirling Prize Awards Dinner and a lecture by Pritzker-Prizewinner Zaha Hadid, architect of the new Glasgow Transport Museum.

The ACN will be attending a number of these events and will itself by holding a first session of the ACN Directors' group as mentioned in Architexture 5.

Catalyst Conference
An event of the UK Presidency of the EU, Catalyst took place earlier this month in Liverpool and Manchester and was attended by the ACN. Incorporating the first national conference of the UK Regional Cultural Consortia, the conference discussed the notion of cultural entitlement with a dedicated session on urban development and regeneration [read more].

CABE Funding
This month saw the announcement by The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) of the next round of a comprehensive two-year Regional Funding Programme for English architecture centres and who are also Full members of the ACN [link].

Member News

Kent Architecture Centre
In association with RIBA South East are co-ordinating a major conference in London on the 10th October 'Designing out Decline' aimed at developing a better understanding of the often complex and subtle process of regeneration and featuring keynote speakers from the ODPM and CABE [more].

RIBA Trust at Chelsea
Currently showing at the Chelsea College of Art a fascinating exhibition co-ordinated by Rob Wilson, Curator of Programmes at the RIBA Trust. Föhn features the work of several invited architects and artists responding individually to Correction, the challenging 1975 novel by Thomas Bernhard [more].

Belfast Consultation
PLACE, the architecture centre for Belfast is currently supporting the Northern Irish Planning Service, an Agency of the Department of the Environment, in the public consultation exercise for the Belfast Metropolitan Area Development Plan 2015 [more].

Urban Design Week 2005
An annual September event co-ordinated by the Urban Design Alliance aimed at raising awareness of high quality public realm and the urban streetscape. In Stoke, Urban Vision North Staffordshire joined in the many initiatives around the UK with a Placecheck a fascinating urban audit toolkit developed by the Urban Design Group [more].

Open House London
Congratulations to Open House for the success of the Open House London weekend on the 17-18th of this month. This annual event once again literally opened the door to hundreds of places and spaces across the capital - and enjoyed by thousands of people [link]

This year also saw an associated contemporary programme from Open House launched by Jasper Conran on the 13th September [more].


Other News

Irish Architecture Foundation
The Irish Government has announced Ireland’s first national Festival of Architecture, organised by the newly established Irish Architecture Foundation.

'Loving Architecture' runs throughout October at venues across the Irish Republic [more].

World Architecture Day
Is in 2005 Tuesday 4th October, and takes the themes of 'Sharing the City' [more].

CABE on the Move
CABE has moved to new offices this month, at 1 Kemble St, London WC2B 4AN [more].

RIBA Royal Gold Medal
The 2005 Royal Gold Medal was awarded this week to Japanese architect Toyo Ito [link]. Jack Pringle, RIBA President spoke of Ito as "an inspiration for generations of architects worldwide".

In 2006, Japenese architecture will be the sole focus of Archilab which shall take place in the city of Orléans from 14 Oct - 30 Dec.

European Architecture Centres

Arc en Rêve
From November 05 to January 06 Arc en Rêve, Bourdeaux's pioneering architecture centre unveils a major show detailing 51 residential schemes by the architect Bernard Bühler [link]. Bühler's practice, in collaboration with Featherstone Associates of London, was recently highly commended in the Anglo-French social housing competition 'Unite Initiative' set up by CABE and DAPA, managed by the Kent Architecture Centre and supported by the Housing Corporation [more].

The Alvar Aalto Academy

From 6-7th October 2005 the The Alvar Aalto Academy will be hosting an international seminar on Architectural Education for Children and Youth [more]. TUM Architecture Centre, Munich
This week saw the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the remarkable work of Austrian architect Heinz Tesar [more].
