ACN News
Induction Day 2005
The ACN is to organise the second annual Induction Day in December 2005 for new staff and associates of UK architecture centres. Building on the success of last year's event, it is an opportunity for individuals in our sector to network, share information and learn more about the ACN and its stakeholders.
ACN Directors' Group
This month saw the first collective meeting of Directors from architecture centres which are full members of the Network. Following what was a productive and stimulating discussion, further meetings have now been planned into 2006.

OPUN
The architecture centre for England's East Midlands has announced details of a new Design Review Panel for the region. Chaired by Peter Stewart, independent architectural and planning advisor and former Director of Design Review at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), the Design Review Panel is funded by the East Midlands Development Agency and supported by Arts Council England [more].
RIBA Trust
Subconscious of a Monument, enjoyed an extended exhibition this October at the RIBA Gallery in London. Artist Cornelia Parker occupied Gallery 1 with an installation comprised of thousands of fragments of desiccated clay removed by engineers from beneath the Tower of Pisa in 2001

Architecture Centre, Bristol
Currently showing until the 25th November, an exhibition by photographer Liz Huyton 'Avonmouth Revisted' examining the industrial landscape of Avonmouth through the use of traditional developing and printing techniques [more].
Photography also features in the new season at the Lighthouse - Scotland's centre, for architecture, design and the city - with a series of photographs by acclaimed photographer Martin Parr depicting Life Along the A8 Corridor from Port Glasgow to Gourock [link].
Also following later next month will be work by Keith Hunter, Extended Conversations: The Scottish Parliament Up Close an exhibition which will place this remarkable building under the close scrutiny of the camera [link].
The Building Exploratory
Next month sees the launch of a creative community engagement initiative by the Building Exploratory in Hackney.
'Treasures of Newington Green' is a celebration of the history of Newington Green in North East London. Working with local children and adults the Exploratory has commissioned a series of beautiful bronze castings cleverly integrated into the streetscape

The Big Draw 2005
The sixth annual event of the Campaign for Drawing ran throughout October at venues across the UK [link]. A number of architecture centres participated this year including Urban Vision North Staffordshire, based in Stoke-on-Trent, who invited local people to attend a number of workshops creating a giant postcard of Burslem [info]. Midlands' Architecture and the Designed Environment (MADE*) has moved to new offices in Birmingham's Eastside, follow this link for new address and contact details. Their move also coincides with the unveiling of a new visual identity and website www.made.org.uk.
Berlin, the Reichstag

October also saw MADE* co-ordinate their second international delegation to a European city; over 30 UK urbanists assembled in Berlin to learn how the German capital is adapting to the challenges in the built environment posed by re-unification [more].

Arts Council England
Throughout October and November 2005 Arts Council England is to hold a series of workshops across the country for individuals and organisations working in the visual arts. Grants for the arts - individuals and organisations, provides grants for a range of national activities and these sessions will provide an opportunity to meet Arts Council staff and other partners to consider the challenges and opportunities for touring and distributing visual arts [booking info]. Academy for Sustainable Communities
The new Chief Executive of the Academy of Sustainable Communities (ASC) has been named as Dr Gill Taylor. Appointed by the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, Dr Taylor is currently Chief Executive of Burnley Borough Council [link].
Brighton Jubilee Library
The 2005 Prime Minister's Better Public Buildings Award has been given to Bennetts Associates' Jubilee Library in the seaside town of Brighton [more]. Now in its fifth year, the Award was endorsed by Tony Blair as an accolade that celebrates excellence in both design quality and procurement practices of public buildings in the UK [link].
Modernist Icon Restored
Staying at the seaside, the 1935 De La Warr Pavilion by Mendelsohn and Chermayeff has reopened this month as a flagship arts centre for England's south coast [link]. The £8m refurbishment was overseen by architects John McAslan and Partners.
CABE Housing Audit
Next month sees the announcement by the CABE of the findings from the second phase of their National Housing Audit. Three launch events will take place across the North West, Yorkshire and Humberside, and the North East revealing empirical evidence about the design quality of new housing in the North, and also providing an opportunity to contribute to the debate on quality housing in light of the audit's findings.
RIBA Stirling Prize
The 2005 Stirling Prize was awarded to the Scottish Parliament Building designed by EMBT/RMJM Ltd.; earlier this month Eric Miralles' controversial building also picked up the RIAS Andrew Doolan Award for Architecture, Best Building in Scotland 2005 [more].
European Architecture Centres
Alvar Aalto Academy
The 10th Anniversary Symposium has been announced by the Aalvar Aalto Academy. 'Less and More - Extending the Rational in Architecture' will take place in the city of Jyväskylä, Finland from 28-30 July 2006 [more].
CAST
Inaugurated earlier this year, the Tilburg Centre for Architecture and Town Planning (CAST), is the newest addition to the impressive portfolio of architecture centres in the Netherlands [link].
IICAT The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia [link] this month played host to eme3, a festival of architecture exploring the territory between science, the arts, and the city [link].
Pavillon de l'Arsenal
This month sees the opening of a new exhibition at The Parisian Centre for Urban Planning and Architecture, Actualités Parisiennes II explores 37 current major developments in the capital, a remarkable 10% of the city's surface area [more].
