ACN News
ACN Education Forum
The fourth in a regular series of two-day workshops for education officers from across the Network took place in Newcastle this week. The fora are proving increasingly popular and an invaluable opportunity for informal learning and sharing between staff and associates of member architecture centres working in built environment education.
National Public Art Conference
The ACN supported the first national public art conference 'The Great Artistic Metropolis' on the 10th November, organised by Art and Architecture Journal [more]. A CD containing biographies, audio files and transcripts of the proceedings is available; please contact us if you are interested in obtaining a copy.
Staff News
After an unexpected bout of pneumonia we are delighted that ACN National Co-ordinator Peter Luxton has recently been able to return to work after a lengthy absence from the office. Education Officer Catherine Williamson has also spent a three week sabbatical touring China, a destination also recently shared by Public Arts Director Robert Powell and a delegation from Arts Council England [more].

Northern Architecture
November saw the launch of a new programme of activity from the Newcastle-based architecture centre. 'My Home, Our Place' invites the public to take a closer look at the places where we live and asks how we create better housing and neighbourhoods through a series of public talks, seminars, discussions, workshops and exhibitions [more].
RIBA Trust
The AR Awards for Emerging Architecture is acknowledged as the world’s leading architecture award for young architects and in 2005 the awards will be presented on the 6th December at the RIBA in London [more].
Architecture Foundation
Opening this November and running until the 20th Jan 06 at The Yard, 'I Shot Norman Foster' is a sideways look at Foster and Partners' London buildings through the eyes of five photographers from the worlds of art, fashion and journalism

MADE*
The architecture centre for Birmingham and the West Midlands has recently announced the winner of a design competition for the Warwick Bar of the city. Local practice Kinetic AIU was successfully selected for this urban masterplan following an open competition co-ordinated by MADE on behalf of ISIS [link].
PLACE
The 20th anniversary Architectural Association of Ireland Design Awards are currently being shown at the Built Environment Centre for Northern Ireland from their Belfast gallery [more].
Kent Architecture Centre
November saw a series of seminars in four locations across the South East from the Architecture Centre, Kent exploring collaboration between teachers, artists, regional Architecture Centres and design professionals in built environment education. Shaping Places was delivered in close collaboration with CABE, Creative Partnerships Hastings and East Sussex, CITB ConstructionSkills, RTPI Planning Aid South East and RIBA South East.
shape Cambridge

The architecture centre for Cambridge and the East of England has announced that their Programme Manager Delyth Turner-Harriss is to become Acting Director in the temporary absence due to illness of Director Ben Koralek. The ACN wishes Ben well in his recovery.
Their programme will of course continue as planned and in November shape delivered their 2005 Built Environment Christmas Lecture, featuring Neil Thomas of the engineering practice Atelier One [more].

Attitudes to the City
The Future Cities Project has published details of its national 'Attitudes to the City' survey which has provided some challenging data, including respondents under the age of 25 in their poll being more concerned about crime and personal safety than older age groups [link].
What's it Like to Live There?
Following on from CABE's recent audit of new developments in the North of England, this latest publication sought to ask residents of a number of private housing developments what it's actually like to live there. Challenging and fascinating reading for architects and developers alike [more].
Urban Forum Conference
Urban Forum, the umbrella body for community and voluntary groups involved in urban regeneration will be holding its national conference in Liverpool on the 6th December [link].
English Heritage
November saw the publication of the fourth annual survey of the state of England’s historic environment: Heritage Counts.
This edition is arguably the most comprehensive report yet produced on the state of England 's rural historical environment.
Key findings include the suggestion that over £163 million will be required for repairs to rural Anglical churches [link].
European Architecture Centres
Architectuur Lokaal, Amsterdam
The national architecture foundation for The Netherlands has published the transcript of the November 2004 meeting of Panorama Europe, a unique series of international exchange meetings which explore architecture and spatial planning. This report, detailing the exchange between The Netherlands and Flanders, makes for fascinating reading of the European context [download pdf file: in Dutch and English].
Arkitekturmuseet
The Swedish Museum of Architecture, Stockholm is currently featuring an exhibition examining contemporary Swedish architecture at the hands of over 20 of their most talented young architects [link].
CIVA, Brussels
Le Centre International pour la Ville, l’Architecture et le Paysage (CIVA) opens a major retrospective of the work of Samuel Mockbee this week [link]. 'Just build it ! The Buildings Of The Rural Studio' runs until March 2006 and is itself a touring exhibition of Architekturzemtrum Wien [www.azw.at].
