Welcome to the Christmas Edition of Architexture, a monthly newsletter from the Architecture Centre Network (ACN) - the independent body representing architecture and built environment centres in the UK.

ACN News

ACN Induction Day
This month saw the second annual induction day for new staff and associates of UK architecture centres, organised by the ACN and hosted at the RIBA in London.

Featuring speakers from CABE, Arts Council England and the OPDM the induction day is a valuable opportunity for member architecture centres to learn more about their respective programmes and to relate this to the wider context of UK policymaking.

CABE Regional Funding Programme
This month has seen CABE communicate the decision of their 2006-8 regional funding programme to ACN members. A formal announcement of the range and scale of the awards is expected in the New Year.

Urban Vision North Staffordshire

Large scale regeneration is set to transform North Staffordshire and Urban Vision, the architecture centre for the region is aiming to work with the community through this process. This month UVNS has announced a new photographic competition 'Down Our Street' inviting the public to capture their view of the built environment [more].

Northern Architecture
The architecture centre for the North East has published this month its pioneering induction pack for Local Authority Design Champions. Produced in collaboration with the North of England Civic Trust, and funded by CABE, English Heritage and One NorthEast it may be downloaded free of charge from their website here [note: 600k pdf file].

Architecture Foundation
Has announced a call for entries for its 2006 Next Generation Award. Won in 2005 by de Rijke Marsh Morgan, the award recognises innovation in the commercial sector by young architectural practices [more].

Accompanying their current exhibition 'I Shot Norman Foster' at their Old Street gallery The Yard, the AF will be offering a free lunchtime talk on the 12 January by Jemima Stehli and Norbert Schoerner who will present their work and approach to the project [more].

Architecture Centre, Bristol
The Architecture Centre has commissioned artist Simon Webb to create a very 21st century Christmas Card. You can view Simon's multimedia-take on the Season here [note 235Kb QuickTime file].

Don't forget, if you are visiting Bristol and are looking for some last minute gifts over the holiday season, did you know that the Architecture Centre also has an excellent shop - stocking all kinds of books, gifts and toys?

RIBA Trust
Currently showing at the RIBA Gallery until the 14 Jan is a beautiful exhibition of the work of Swiss architect Mario Botta, and features several spectacular models of his work together with Botta's own sketches on blackboards created following his visit to the gallery [more].

Doncaster Design Centre
Whilst the town wakes up this week to the result of a disappointing but nail-biting football match, the Doncaster Design Centre is showing an altogether more contemplative display of emotion with its current exhibition of work by local artists in response to the changing face of the town [link].

Kent Architecture Centre
December saw the call for expressions of interest from architects and designers for two new 30m span footbridges within the Rochester Riverside development in a fascinating design competition run by the Kent Architecture Centre [more].

PLACE

The team at PLACE in Belfast are demonstrating community engagement in an entirely appropriate way for the season by serving Christmas shoppers with mince pies and hot drinks - all in aid of local homeless charity Simon Community [link].

Appointments
Chris Murray has been announced as the new lead advisor for sustainable communities and the built environment at Arts Council England [more].

PROJECT Awards
The final round of awards supporting the involvement of artists in the built environment has been made this month. Over £100k has been awarded to ten regeneration schemes across the UK including development plans at Guildford Cathedral and the new planning framework at Plymouth Waterfront. PROJECT is managed by Public Art South West and funded by CABE and Arts & Business [info].

Serpentine Gallery
The architect of the 2006 Serpentine pavilion in Hyde Park, London has been announced as Dutch designer, Rem Koolhaas [link].

Arts Council Peer Review
The report of an independent review of Arts Council England, commissioned jointly by the DCMS and Arts Council has been published this month. Peer Review is the process followed by the DCMS to examine the operation of its 71 different sponsored bodies. A copy of the report is available to download from: www.artscouncil.org.uk/peerreview

Cox Review
December too has seen the widely anticipated publication of the Cox Review of Creativity in Business [link]. A key recommendation to the Chancellor by Sir George Cox is the establishment of a national network of ‘Creativity and Innovation’ centres [download Cox Review: Chapter 8 375k pdf file]

Inspired!
Many of the 16,800 listed place of worship will be holding services over the Christmas period. Securing a future for historic church buildings will be the focus of a new initiative by English Heritage launching in Spring 2006. Inspired! will be a mixture of research, pilot projects, training and capacity building to identify how best to keep Britain's parish churches alive and thriving [link].

Architecture Centres International

ICAM
The international organisation for architectural museums has announced details of the icam13 conference in Athens in June 2006, taking its theme as 'East and West' [link].

Deutsches Architektur Zentrum
The German Centre for Architecture, Berlin is currently showing an exhibition of the work of 70 young architects from the new EU member states. Emerging Identities - EAST! takes an architectural journey across the cities of Eastern Europe www.daz.de

Finlands Arkitekturmuseum
The Museum of Finnish Architecture is to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2006. A key event in its commerative year will be a major retrospective of the American-Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, opening in Helsinki in the autumn of 2006 www.mfa.fi.
